  • The King of the Americans
July 17, 2024

By Steve Pincus

In her dissenting opinion in Trump v. United States, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor declared that with the majority’s ruling, “the President is now a king above the law.” In this, she is wrong: the majority opinion has given the US president far more power than English kings had at the time of the American Revolution.

Who ever is President now or in the future will have more power then the English king at the time of the American Revolution.

ie. Biden could write a Presidential decree that says no convicted felon can be President of the US, along with numerous other scenarios, then claim immunity in 6 months.

Biden could cancel the November election, if he thinks the Dems were going to lose, all in the name of Democracy. And be immune from prosecution.

That is too much power for any President.

Any President, of any party, is now above the law.

The US Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity has given the president far more power than English kings had at the time of the American Revolution.

The 1688-89 English Revolution had created a king bound by law – the same principle that underpinned the Declaration of Independence.
