The US nuclear industry remains heavily dependent on Moscow for the enriched uranium that fuels reactors generating about a fifth of the nation’s electricity, highlighting the challenge of meeting a 2028 deadline to end Russian purchases.
US reactor operators bought about 3.28 million separative work units, or SWUs, of Russian enrichment services in 2025, equal to almost 26% of their total purchases, according to data published Wednesday in the Energy Information Administration’s latest uranium marketing report. That compares with 17% a decade earlier.
